When light falters from the torch, when rain starts to kill away the flames, when stars refrain from glittering, when vision seems to be unclear, when everything turns into oblivion -- there occurs death.
According to Wikipedia, death is the termination of the biological functions that sustain a living organism. It refers both to the particular processes of life’s cessations as well as to the condition or state of a formerly living body. Death is a natural process just as life is. One can die at 81 years old; the other may die as young as a baby. Everyone lives and eventually dies.
Death fears us all. Nobody was prepared for the natural tragedy which happened in Japan last March 11, 2011 that resulted to a death of more than 10,000 people. Young and old, rich and poor --- they died all so suddenly. Famine was once rampant in Africa which caused the people living there to die of hunger. Even in the Philippines, half of a hundred died on the Ampatuan Massacre. More frightening than that is our own death: the uncertainties it brings and the torments it bears that even at this very moment, life will be stolen from us. Can somebody save us from such?
On the side of the Christians, we believe in the life after death. Our sins when we’re alive will be saved through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Accepting Him as our lord and living a life in accordance to God’s conviction will save us from the fires of hell. In other words, death is a new birth of something bigger for us. If that is where we’re going after dying, then death becomes less frightening. But man has always the options whether to choose the lane in contrary to that belief or not.
Man has always the options. Too many roads can be taken yet there is none that can lead us out of darkness; we’re trapped by death, no one has to live forever alive --- that’s the reality everyone must face and deal with. People say that we must live everyday as if it’s our last. But the root question is that --- are we ready for death? Clock may stop ticking now.
